Student Assistant

Participants work closely with faculty and staff members to provide services in many university departments. Students earn wages and, if eligible, a scholarship while gaining valuable work experience while pursuing their degree.

  • You must be a full-time student in undergraduate or graduate school.

Once you have been offered and accepted a student assistant position, you will need to complete your employment forms.

Bring the completed forms along with your acceptable documents for the Form I-9 to Student Employment.

Wages
What is my hourly wage?

As a student assistant participant, you earn federal minimum wage (state minimum if higher) for all hours worked and, if eligible, tuition scholarships.

What is a typical student assistant work schedule?

Student assistants generally work 20-25 hours per week.

Some positions are academic year only and some departments employ students during the summer.

Students that work in this program can take advantage of priority registration. This can help with planning your class schedule around your job.

Taxes

Do I need to pay taxes on wages earned in my student assistant job?

Yes. Wages earned are subject to federal and state tax withholding. As an enrolled student, your wages are exempt from FICA taxes (Social Security and Medicare taxes) pending your position is classified as a part-time position and you do not have a break in classes of more than 5 weeks.
